REMEMBRANCE

Each year the Foundation supports anniversary events, including supporting private events for bereaved and survivors to come together, a large community vigil by the Tower, and the larger Silent Walks that significant dates bring. We also support with green lighting of community buildings, floral tributes, and other ways to remember for the wider community. The Foundation has raised funds to be able to provide a fitting anniversary led by bereaved families, survivors and the community on the 14 June for years to come, and we welcome any ideas that mark this date in a fitting way.

Grenfell Anniversaries

We support a number of initiatives on and around the 14th June every year. These have previously included a multi faith service held at the base of the Tower by Grenfell United, video tributes from families, transport to sites of Memorial and the Silent Walks attended by thousands of people that follow in the evening. The video shown here is from the 5 Year Anniversary service in 2022.

Grenfell Memorial Cup

On the 21st May 2022, in partnership with QPR, we supported bereaved and survivors to put on the Grenfell Memorial Cup, a day of remembrance through football where 600 local people played at Loftus Road, and over 4000 came to watch. The final game of the day was of bereaved and survivors vs emergency service workers in a 72 minute match. In May 2023, the event was held at St Georges Park, the England training ground where 500 community members came up to play. In May 2024, the event was held back at Loftus Road Stadium with a bereaved and survivor friendly game.

Remembering Together

Each year we support Grenfell Untied for bereaved and survivor young people to come together and collectively remember and reflect in partnership with Grenfell Health and Wellbeing. They often produce a collective piece of art alongside individual creations which are put on display at the Grenfell Anniversary events.

Grenfell Mosaic

The mosaic is a focal point of remembrance at the base of Grenfell Tower. Each month a different community, faith group or school work with artists to create a new section to add to the artwork, organised by ACAVA Arts and Al Manaar Muslim Cultural Heritage Centre.

Silent Walks

Previously to Covid, every month the community came together for a silent walk, to remember those lost in the fire, support each other and to keep the campaign for justice in the public eye. This is now twice a year on 14th December and 14t June. The Foundation supports the walk and provides the local organisers with equipment they need to keep the walk safe. During the peak of Covid the walks weren’t able to take place, so instead we  supported video tributes both in memorial, and to keep people aware of what was happening in terms of the Inquiry and wider post Grenfell issues and campaigns.

TREES 4 GRENFELL T4G is a project committed to planting trees and developing small memorial gardens which are tranquil places of remembrance and reflection around the vicinity of Grenfell Tower. They also maintain the ‘Wall of Truth’ area, a central place of gathering for the community since the fire. Their long term plan is to plant 72 trees on Westway land and their project both upskills and gives therapeutic benefit to the community. For more information please CLICK HERE.

We have supported projects and initiatives that aid the wellbeing and recovery of the local community.

Fight 4 North Kensington

WATCH HERE

Every year since 2018, we have partnered with Durrants Gym on the ‘Fight 4 Grenfell’ to offer 10 weeks of free boxing training, followed by a Fight Night for those new to the sport, raising money for local causes. Since 2023, this is now ‘Fight 4 North Kensington’ which although will always have Grenfell at it’s heart, now raises funds for other important causes across the area as well as Grenfell related organisations (Video Credit Big Fight UK).

Female Only Swimming

In 2023, we supported a trial of a women’s only, culturally appropriate swimming session at the Kensington Leisure Centre in partnership with the Grenfell Health and Wellbeing Service, which featured both the lesson itself, and time to come together afterwards to discuss common issues the group was going through. The trial was a success and has now been taken on as a permanent project by Grenfell Health and Wellbeing.

AWARENESS

Grenfell Curriculum

We are supporting a project with a number of researchers, who are working closely with Grenfell family members to look at how Grenfell could be taught in schools in the future as part of the Grenfell legacy. They are meeting with both young people and adults to see what and how Grenfell could be taught, with a long term goal of having it as a staple part of the curriculum.

Mabel TShirt

Artist and local resident Mabel has worked with a group of young bereaved and survivors to produce a t-shirt, as part of an ongoing effort to get younger voices heard in the Grenfell story. Proceeds of the Tshirt will be held by the Grenfell Foundation, who will work with the young people involved to decide how the money could best support youth in North Kensington in the future.
